Exclusive: XIA (JYJ’s Junsu) Talks New Studio Album “Xignature” And Musical Style
XIA, also known as JYJ’s Kim Junsu, is back with his fourth studio album – “Xignature” – showing his passion and determination to produce high quality music that stays true to his unique style. The album has 13 tracks that features everything from powerful ballads to high-energy dance music that showcase XIA’s musical skill and range.
The first title track of his fourth studio album is “Rock the World,” a hip-hop inspired dance track that features Automatic, who also worked with XIA on his “Incredible” album, and rapper The Quiett. The song focuses on the vibrant energy of the stage, and through XIA’s lyrics, expresses a dynamic atmosphere that ensures a one-of-a-kind performance from Junsu, for which he is known to deliver.
The second title track is “Sweet Melody,” which features the sweet vocals of singer Ben. XIA also wrote the lyrics for “Sweet Melody,” describing how one feels in front of the person he/she loves, nervous and shy, but wanting to confess and give everything to that person.
Before XIA embarks on his concert tour, Soompi was able to catch up with the artist for a short interview in which he discussed his new album and his musical tastes, showing his pride in the album.
If you had to choose one, what is your favorite track from your fourth studio album, “Xignature”?
It’s hard to choose just one, so I will say the title track “Rock the World” and the second title track of this album, “Sweet Melody.” Specifically for “Sweet Melody,” the quality of the song is high and you can hear how well-balanced my voice is with singer Ben’s. The lovely melody of the song matches well with the summer time.

You’re able to successfully pull off both dance tracks and ballads, but is there a genre you prefer?
Actually, I have no preference. I think there are different charms to both genres. In terms of dance music, it’s always the best way for communicating with fans by giving a performance. For ballads, they are able to deliver sensitive emotions.
Are there any music genres that you would like to challenge, for example, like Jazz or the Blues?
While they are not traditional jazz genre songs, there are two jazzy ballad tracks in my new album. I greatly enjoyed recording them as I felt the appeal of the genre and its characteristics. I have not yet tried to the Blues genre, as you know, but I would like to try it someday for sure.
What’s the best way to cheer you up when you’re down?
Yummy food! (laughing) When I feel down or am a bit depressed, I think enjoying my favorite foods is the best way to refresh myself. It’s my secret healing time.
What can we expect from you in the near future?
After releasing this album on May 30, I held a live showcase to reach out and communicate closely with fans. I’ll soon be embarking on an Asia concert tour, starting in Seoul on June 11 and 12, and then proceeding to to Nagoya, Kobe, Tokyo, etc.
Do you have anything that you want to say to your international fans?
I have come back with my fourth studio album! The album contains 13 tracks of various genres that I love. I hope that you will also love it. Thank you for all your love and interest; as always, I appreciate it a lot. I hope to see you again soon with great performances. Thank you!

JYJ's Junsu is all smiles behind the scenes of his showcase for 'XIGNATURE'.
On June 1, C-JeS Entertainment revealed previously unseen photos of the star preparing for the showcase, held on May 30, for his 4th solo album. Junsu rocked the 3000 fans who showed up to see his comeback with "Rock the World", and it looks like he had an amazing time as well.
In other news, Junsu will be holding his '2016 XIA 5th Asia Tour Concert in Seoul' at Seoul's Olympic Park on June 11-12.

On May 31, JYJ's Junsu promoted his 4th solo album through his Naver 'V' App channel, taking on a variety of missions as well as questions from his fans!
During the broadcast, a question asked, "Who are the idol hoobaes you cherish?" to which he answered, "There are too many hoobaes. So I can't memorize all of their names, but I cherish B2ST. And I also like INFINITE."
He also relayed a story about another hoobae group he evidently treasures, saying, "BTOB are very good at greetings, but Sungjae is especially kind. One day, I went to the salon and Sungjae was sleeping, so I just walked past quietly. But a few seconds later, he ran up to me and greeted me. It was very memorable. He didn't have to do that."
Maybe we should teach Junsu some of the new idol groups' names!

SEOUL, May 30 (Yonhap) -- Junsu of South Korean pop trio JYJ emerged triumphant in an outdoor showcase for his fourth full-length solo studio album in southeastern Seoul on Monday.
Junsu, also known by his full name Kim Jun-su and stage name Xia Junsu from his former boy band TVXQ, glowed in his solo act, without a glimpse of nervousness. The 29-year-old singer-songwriter hopped onto the stage, flashing blond hair and blue-and-white jacket.

A crowd thronged the stage, set up on the square near the east gate of global exhibition center COEX.
The showcase showed more than a peek at "XIGNATURE," flaunting a diverse gamut of musical genres from hip hop to urban R&B.
"His voice is amazing, and I think he is the best singer in Korea," said Anastasia from Russia, asking to be identified only by her first name.
"Honestly, I really like Jaejoong of JYJ, but Junsu's voice is just perfect -- I think Korea needs to be proud of Junsu," the 26-year-old said.

The singer, a K-pop veteran of 13 years, apparently had more than just singing talent, with an acting history that has earned him a strong fan following.
"I think (JYJ members) are super-talented, true artists in singing, songwriting and (acting)," said Loi Butler, a landscape architect from California in her fifties. Butler first became aware of JYJ members from their dramas, such as "Rooftop Prince" starring Yuchun and "Triangle" starring Jaejoong.
She continued, "I think the hardships they go through is just heartbreaking, and (so is) the fact that Koreans don't appreciate them as much as they should. I think it's a shame that (JYJ members) are not allowed to promote (their songs) like everybody else."

The JYJ trio debuted as singers in 2004 as members of then-five-membered TVXQ of S.M. Entertainment. After Junsu, Jaejoong and Yuchun left TVXQ in 2009, citing an unfair contract, the three singers became blacklisted from terrestrial television networks and technically banned from appearing on their music shows, which still are the driving media outlet for K-pop bands to promote their works.
Despite state intervention into the agency-musician fight, the ban has not been lifted, forcing Junsu to set up an "outdoor stage" to introduce his new songs to the public.
In addition to his engagements with musical performances and plays, Junsu has been active in solo singing activities as well.
Junsu released his first full-length solo album "Tarantallegra" in May 2012. His second album, "Incredible," came in July 2013 and third album, "Flower," in March 2015.
